The tunnels under Market Square, Aylesbury
Exploring the Myth with Mix 96 – The tunnels under Aylesbury Market Square
I was fortunate to accompany two of the radio presenters from Mix 96 (www.mix96.co.uk) on their exploration of the mythical tunnels that are said to be hidden under the Market Square in Aylesbury.
Local History: The King's Head Inn is notable as being one of the oldest public houses with a coaching yard in the south of England. It is located in the Market Square, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. The inn was linked to churches and establishments in the town via a system of underground tunnels that were in use during the Civil War as escape routes should the town be taken by Royalist troops. These tunnels are now filled in.
Whilst it may be true that the tunnels leading from The King’s Head are filled in, one tunnel remains open and can be accessed from the basement of a well know camping shop. Access is not normally granted to the public but the owners had offered to show the presenters from Mix 96 the tunnel and old well to show that they still existed.
